12. Sabha -> Ghat

April 18th 2006: Flying to Ghat

After 10 AM we take off direction Ghat. It’s nice and warm.
Ruedi has some little troubles with his engine so he and Alex with the Bonza stay behind. They will follow us very soon.
We took the other day the coordinates of the Mandara Lakes we visited and try to find them again. It’s no problem to find “our” lake. We are circling around and over fly a group of 4x4 vehicles.

The flight to Ghat takes over 3 hours, we have strong headwind. Towards Ghat the view is decreasing. The air looks very sandy and dusty and it’s getting warmer in the Cockpit. Too bad that the surrounding mountains in Ghat are hidden in the haze.

We are landing at almost 40°. Again we are refuelling the planes from a mattress. We are sweating and soon we feel that we haven’t drunk enough. I feel very dizzy. Luckily we can park the planes in a huge empty hangar. Karim is organizing water it’s really hot.
Ruedi has no luck after landing. One of the main landing gear is broken. It takes that whole afternoon to fix it. Luckily Alex and Pierre have the right material with and they manage to fix it.

Because of the heat we have a program change. Instead of going into the desert for camping we go to a hotel and rest for a while.

Visiting Ghat

After arriving in the hotel I went to sleep in the room for an hour or two. I was absolutely popped out because of the heat.
In the evening we visited the old town of Ghat and the Citadel. Not many people live their anymore.
Before sunset our drivers brought us into the desert where we had a wonderful BBQ. A relaxing evening.
